Abundant Wisdom

“If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.”

~James 1:5-6 (NIV)

I can tell you that I ask God for wisdom almost daily. I know that I need to increase in my knowledge of who He is and how He’s working in my life. The most important thing to remember is that this passage follows the two verses I wrote about yesterday called
Pure Joy. We always need to ask God for wisdom regarding the trials we face in life. Our ability to understand the things that we go through is so limited, so we need to constantly ask God for wisdom to see things through a wider lens. Our scope on life will never be broad like God’s is, but through the wisdom God gives us we can come to understand a little more of His purpose through our trials.

“If any of you lacks wisdom…”

I’m guessing that any one who reads this is a lot like me. We all need a little more wisdom to understand the things of God. The next part of the verse is even more exciting. Feel free to read on!

“…he should ask God…”

It’s that simple! If you lack wisdom, then all you need to do is ask God for it. What are you waiting for?

“…who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.”

God doesn’t give just a little bit of wisdom when you ask for it. He opens up the gates of Heaven and pours it out generously for you. He wants you to understand why things are difficult. He wants to give you strength for each new day. He wants to give you wisdom so your life can glorify Him in new and amazing ways.

“But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt…”

The second thing God asks of us is that we BELIEVE when we ask for wisdom. I can’t speak for everyone else, so I will just speak for myself. I know it’s so easy to doubt that I will not understand why my physical health is the way it is, so sometimes I ask for wisdom without believing God will give it to me because I don’t know what it means to have it. It’s not right to do that. I know God is working in my life and I know He wants to give me a greater understanding of the trials I face on a daily basis. He’s God and He has plans that I can’t conceive of.

When I ask for wisdom, I need to believe that God has every intention of helping me see things through His lens. I may never understand life here on this earth, but that’s not what I’m asking God for–I’m asking Him for wisdom. Wisdom to live in a way that glorifies the One, True King.

“…because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.”

I certainly don’t want to be tossed by the wind. The sea can get very rough, if you’re not careful. I pray you and I will take this seriously. May we learn to ask for wisdom and believe with our whole heart that God will come through on what we ask of Him. He desires to show us so much more!

Dear Father God, Thank You for making it possible for me to access wisdom through You. Thank You for reminding me that I need to believe You when I ask for this in Your name. You have been and always will be faithful to me! May I not be tossed like a wave in the sea. I want to live a strong life for You dear Lord!
