Motivated by Compassion

Easter

This week leading up to Easter I would like to share some devotionals with you from my new book Praying through the Gospels.  I have included some links at the end of the devotion, if you would like to order the book.  Praying through the Gospels is pretty simple.  It’s just a small reflection in prayer on different aspects from the Gospels and what Jesus did for us.  Hope you enjoy this week of devotionals!

Act of Compassion

 When those who were around Him saw what was going to happen,

they said, “Lord, shall we strike with the sword?”

And one of them struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his right ear.

But Jesus answered and said, “Stop! No more of this.”

And He touched his ear and healed him. Luke 22:49–51, NASB

Lord, it is so impressive to see this act of compassion toward one of your capturers. You displayed a tremendous act of kindness during a very difficult time. You were betrayed
by one of your own disciples, arrested, and on Your way to face six trials, which would ultimately lead to your sentence of crucifixion, You were about to take on the sins of the
world, and all your disciples deserted you. Yet you stopped to show compassion. You stopped to perform a miracle for someone who didn’t deserve it. You stopped to redirect the thoughts of those around you, and you stopped to show the glory of God!

Lord, so often when I’m going through something difficult, I have a low tolerance for others. I do not show compassion as readily as I should when my heart is aching.

Lord, I pray that I will be more like Christ and show compassion to others even in the midst of my own pain.  May I not miss a moment of what you have for me, Lord!  Please help me to direct my thoughts and my actions toward you! May I better reflect the mindset of Christ that I see in these verses.

Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus.

Showing Compassion

Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.” (Lamentations 3:22-24)

On this earth we experience many great loves in many different forms, but the truth is the GREATEST LOVE of all comes through God.  Because of His love given to us on a daily basis, we do not have to be consumed by the world’s madness.  God’s love doesn’t fail us!  It never let’s go.  It never gives up on us.  It sees through all our flaws.  His love remains steadfast even through the moments that we are unsteady in our walk with the Lord.

Worthy of Praise

I love this verse!  I daily enjoy taking time to thank God for His abundant work in my life.  I love taking notice of every little thing that He has done for me.  Have you thanked Him lately?  If you were to tell someone about the kindnesses of the Lord, what would your list look like?  How many things would you be able to share?

Wardrobe Plan

Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds all together in perfect unity. (Colossians 3:12-14)

Do you know what an honor it is to be loved by God?  It’s a privilege beyond any this world can offer you.  I pray you are experiencing His love daily, as you read His Word and enjoy His creation all around you.  We must clothe ourselves with five things:  compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.

Clothe yourself with the fruit of the Holy Spirit!

The Greek word for “to clothe” is enduo, which means to sink into, to put on, to wear, or be dressed in.  In the context of this scripture it simply means to sink oneself into the very characteristics of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.  The Scripture passage is telling us that we must actually put on these qualities in our lives.  We must let Christ wrap us up with the qualities that are found in this verse.  Our identity in Christ becomes stronger every day, as we live our lives out for God.  We can’t believe that these qualities will simply exist just because we call ourselves Christians.  No, they are a product of being in the Word daily and spending time with God in various ways.

Because I Said So

Because of the LORD’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.

I say to myself, ‘The LORD is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.’ The LORD is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the LORD.” (Lamentations 3:22-26)

Time to take a break from Psalm 119.  The website I have been talking about will be going live today and I want to talk about God’s faithfulness.  I will return to Psalm 119 when the Lord leads me to.  For now, please enjoy the many different passages of scripture that God wants us to explore together.
